IF THE POWER GOES OUT

No one enjoys a power outage. Fortunately, Big Country Electric Cooperative’s record for restoring power after an outage is outstanding. Below are a few tips to assist you should a power outage occur:

•    Keep a Power Outage Kit which includes flashlights, a portable radio with fresh batteries, matches, candles, and spare fuses. Make sure each member of your family knows where your power outage kit is located. Instruct each family member about what to do during an outage.

•    Check fuses or breakers in your switchbox panel.

•    Check to see if lights are off at your neighbor’s house.

•    If fuses or breakers are okay, call Big Country Electric Cooperative at 1-888-662-2232. Give your name, telephone number, and location and report how long the power has been off. Give any information that will help Big Country Electric Cooperative determine the extent and general area of the outage and aid in speeding repair service.

•    Turn off all electrical appliances, especially air conditioners or electric heating. Leave one light on so you will know when power is restored.

•    Turn on your portable radio and listen for messages from Big Country Electric Cooperative. Broadcast messages will occur only during a prolonged or major outage.

•    Stay away from downed power lines and broken utility poles. Please note the location of the downed line or pole and call your cooperative immediately. Even lines that look harmless can be very dangerous.

•    If your power is still out but power to your neighbors’ homes is restored, please call Big Country Electric Cooperative again.

•    Refrain from opening your refrigerator and freezer; food will keep much longer if the doors remain closed. After an extended period of time, cover your refrigerator or freezer with a blanket.
